When Milosz received his Nobel Prize in 1980, the Berkeley literary community was, of course, ecstatic. Although the university has many Nobel Prize winners in the sciences, Milosz was the first, and so far only, Berkeley professor to receive the Nobel in literature. Chancellor Ira Michael Heyman asked Milosz if the university could do something special to show its appreciation. Milosz said that he would like to have a private parking space at the university, where parking is notoriously tight!
